Otherworldan Artifacts

Artifacts are objects, usually retrieved from Dungeons, that are capable of acts beyond or outside the normal reaches of science, or, manages to create a feasible result without any feasible source. Their very existence flies in the face of centuries of scientific analysis of the universe and its workings. They come in packages large and small, extravagant and ignorable. While some take the form of stereotype, like a wand or potion, others seem to come in more modern trappings. Many Dungeons seem to warp and distort modern items that already existed there, changing them into Artifacts.

Some well documented instances of this include, but are not limited to:

bulletA toaster that could keep a ten foot by ten foot room at a steady sixty degrees, without being plugged in.
bulletA Super Nintendo© joystick with the ability to exert telekinetic force.
bulletA fireman's helmet that glows.
bulletA shirt that alters the wearer to fit in it properly.

To the untrained eye, only 'odd' looking artifacts can be easily discerned. The amateur Dungeon Delver goes for potions, wands, rings, and other things that look mysterious or just valuable. To scientists, there appear to be tell tale signs, and also a distinct magnetic pattern that such items produce. Whether this is caused by their abilities or a byproduct of their creation, it is an easy way to pinpoint and locate them using a small handheld device. This device, called the Peterson Device, so called after a small time scientist working for the MEC who invented it, works like a radar, showing strong sources of this magnetic radiation within a hundred feet.

The raw power of an Artifact seems directly related to the strength of the Dungeon that it was located in. Weak and largely 'mundane' dungeons produce only interesting trinkets. The great Dungeon incident of the New York subway produced some of the stronger Artifacts found to date. This risk for the goods dynamic inspires many brave souls to dare the depths of malignant Dungeons in the hope of finding something that'll make them rich.

Most artifacts out there have been both retrieved and now held by the MEC.  There they are studied constantly in an attempt to patch the holes in the laws of science that they created. "There must be an explanation", is the common thought, some reason behind their function. If found, the scientific community may be able to resume breathing.

The MEC has posted a bounty on Artifacts, offering a reward to private citizens who turn them in, depending on the utility and power of the Artifact in question. Five thousand dollars for a mere trinket and on upwards from there. Is it any reason people are foolishly tromping into dungeons without being prepared?

There has been limited success in replicating Artifacts. Trained magi and technicians, working in concert have created a small variety of trinkets. Mostly things that glow or spark without any apparent power source or means. While a great breakthrough, some of the investors are displeased and are hoping for more.. lucrative.. results.

Otherworldans that have been asked and care to reply say that the Artifacts are manufactured on their world, though not with any great ease. "Only the powerful mages bother with that stuff.", quotes one Otherworldan. There has to date been no Otherworldan that can create Artifacts, at least, none that has made his or her talent known to the public.
