OW-0029 Other Worlds

Gathered from interrogations of sentient beings and deciphering of
various manuals and texts found in the dungeons, the Otherworld, as labeled
by the media, is a place straight from human fantasy. With the appearance
of sentients in the last several months, humanity is facing the possibility
of social revolution.

For those Otherworldans who are close enough to human to pass in a crowd,
notably elves, Halflings, half-elves, dwarves, half-orcs and orcs(sometimes),
a semblance of a life can be had in their new environment. By phasing in and
pretending to be human like those around them, they avoid trouble while
profiting from their 'unique' abilities. Orcs lead around lesser willed humans
in bloody gang violence. Elves get hired on by media agencies to sell their
goods to the world. One particular Halfling has a cooking show that has
remarkable ratings, for a cooking show at least. So long as these people don't
over emphasize the fact that they're anything other than people, they're left
alone.

Because of the law stating that non-humans could not be citizens of the US,
most otherworldans who find employment are registered in odd and bizarre ways.
A security firm may hire a co-operative dragon on as a 'guard dog'. A TV studio
hired on actors as 'foreign talent', paying out the nose to secure green cards
for their exotic employees.

For those who are obviously not of human nature, a much different world
awaits. Dragons and unicorn are generally given a cold welcome with brandished
firearms and slung spells before any questions are asked, especially if they
make themselves apparent in any population center. It's usually best for large
and exotic creatures to remain in the wilderness.

In the example of the dragon made security, This dragon, Mar'tich, managed
to bribe a passing hiker with a gold coin large enough to crush his car if he
would act as a messenger. With his human voice hired, he negotiated with
various organizations from afar. Such long distance communication is not rare
amongst otherworldans seeking a place in society but fearing retribution from
the MEC.

The MEC does not pursue otherworldans in gainful employment, assuming
they don't cause trouble for the masses in any scope beyond human norm. If
the crime is mundane however, the local police contingent handles it. Should
the otherworldan employ magic to escape from judicial reach, the MEC is
called in and the otherworldan is marked for immediate 'containment', be
that death or imprisonment.

Just because the MEC does not actively persue the peaceful otherworldans,
that does not mean that they are left to their own affairs. Because of their
universal lack of human rights, those who are bitter about their world being
'invaded', and those who just like making trouble are prone to attacking
otherworldans. The kid who liked to shoot squirrels with his gun now has a much
larger target that will give a more satisfying reaction when abused. Religious
fanatics and even some who were displaced when the otherworldans managed
to find employment may go into a rage.

Worst of all for the otherworldans, the police do nothing. So long as it's not
breaking the flow of life for the actual citizens, an otherworldan can be beat to
a pulp in broad daylight in front of a precinct station without any risk of being
helped. This has led many otherworldans to a withdrawn and slightly paranoid
mindset. Any particular 'terran', as some otherworldans refer to normal people,
could assault them without any fear of retribution from their so called justice
system.
